Kinichi Shigeno was born in Japan and studied ceramics at the Ceramic Institute in Seto.

After a seven year apprenticeship and a year in Arita researching porcelain bodies, he moved to Canada in 1981.
Shigeno's work is influenced by traditional Kutani patterns and colors which are closely associated with contemporary forms.
The balance between these elements has enabled him to produce a body of work which can be viewed as a unique blend of east and west. The exploration of three dimensional shapes and colors to enhance images has enabled him to work in both functional ware and sculpture.
Since moving to British Columbia and establishing his studio, he has exhibited both nationally and internationally.
In 1989 he was one of two Canadians whose work was included in the prestigious International Ceramics Art Competition in Faenza, Italy. More recently his work has been exhibited at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taiwan and at
