Leopoldo Enrique García-Alas y Ureña, also known as Clarín, was a Spanish realist novelist born in Zamora[1†]. His inflammatory articles, known as paliques (“chitchat”), as well as his advocacy of liberalism and anti-clericalism, made him a formidable and controversial critical voice[1†][2†].

Early Years and Education
Leopoldo Alas was born on April 25, 1852, in Zamora, Spain, to Asturian parents who had moved to that city[1†]. He spent his childhood living in León and Guadalajara[1†].
